  29.      AboutClock  V3.00 is Shareware  and  NOT  Public Domain, and
  30. as  such  a  small  registration  fee  of 5  pounds  sterling  is
  31. required  if  you  decide  that  AboutClock V3.00  should  be  in
  32. your software collection. This will entitle  you to  a  disk with
  33. a collection  of otherwise  unobtainable programs  by me  and the
  34. next major upgrade.

  36.      Payment should be in the form of a crossed cheque drawn from
  37. a UK mainland bank payable to the author.

  39.      The  distribution  of   AboutClock  V3.00  MUST  be  intact,
  40. unaltered, and include the following files :

  48. Description
  49.  
  50.      Do you remember the good old days when you asked someone the
  51. time and they  said, "It's nearly five" and not "It's 4:57 and 28
  52. seconds" ?
  53.  
  54.      Well now there is a Workbench clock that does just that! 
  55.  
  56.      AboutClock  V3.00  is  an  unobtrusive  clock  that  nestles
  57. neatly at the top  of Workbench, telling  the time  in words in a
  58. window  that  re-sizes  itself  to  account  for  the  length  of
  59. message required. It is now  able to tell the time in a number of
  60. different European languages thanks to the efforts of Daniel Amor
  61. who provided the idea and translations.

  63.      Also,  for short-sighted Amiga users, there is the option to
  64. have AboutClock V3.00 speak the time!
  65.  
  66.      Not  only  is  AboutClock V3.00  simple  and functional, but
  67. it is compatible with all versions of Workbench!

  71. Usage - CLI/startup-sequence
  72.  
  73.      type "run" like this to run the program in the background:

  75.      run <nil: >nil: path:AboutClock

  77.      To enable  AboutClock  to  read  it's  preferences, the icon
  78.      must be present in the  same  directory as the main program.

  81. Usage - WorkBench
  82.       
  83.      Double click the icon. That's all there is to it.
  84.

  86.      AboutClock  V3.00  will by default appear  in  the  top left
  87. corner of the Workbench screen.
  88.  
  89.      AboutClock  V3.00  has  three  menus,  Project,  Speech  and
  90. Language.
  91.  
  92.      The Project menu gives  the options of ABOUT and QUIT, which
  93. give details of the author, and quit the  program respectively.
  94.  
  95.      The  Speech  menu  has TIME?... and  SPEECH. Selecting Time?
  96. will  make  AboutClock V3.00 tell you the current time, using the
  97. Amiga's incredible  built in speech  facility, where as selecting
  98. Speech will force  AboutClock V3.00 to tell you the time whenever
  99. it changes. This will be indicated  by a tick next to the option.

  101.      In order to use  the speech option,  it is required that the
  102. following files are present on your Amiga setup:
  103.  
  104.     DEVS:narrator.device
  105.          audio.device (WB1.2/1.3 only.)
  106.             
  107.     LIBS:translator.library
  108.          icon.library
  109.       
  110. If the program fails to  find  these  files it won't allow speech
  111. after telling you the problem. WB2.x users will find all but 1 of
  112. these files on their  original  WB  disks. The audio.device is in
  113. the ROM for these machines.
  114.  
  115.    * WB3.0 users note :- Commodore have  deemed in their infinite
  116.                          strangeness  not  to  include  the files
  117.                          narrator.device  and  translator.library
  118.                          on the  WB disks!?  Why?  Well I suppose
  119.                          that they decided  they  have power over
  120.                          the Amiga voice  and  wanted  to silence
  121.                          it. (Ahhh...shame on you CBM!)
  122.                          So I have therefore started the anti-CBM
  123.                          RAVe motion, (Return the Amiga's VoicE).
  124.                          This is to persuade  the big C to return
  125.                          the lost library and device files to the
  126.                          poor deprived WB3  users  who have never
  127.                          heard sexy!?!? Paula speak.
  128.                          If you are a  WB3  owner  then the files
  129.                          will work on  your  machine  and all you
  130.                          have to do is get  them from a friend or
  131.                          a PD library. Then you can hear Paula in
  132.                          her proudest moment!(PC owners suck...!)
  133.  
  134.      The Language menu is  used to  select the  language you want
  135. time to be displayed  in.  It consists  of  a number  of mutually
  136. exclusive menu items  each with  their own  keyboard shortcut. By
  137. selecting one of these languages, AboutClock will change the text
  138. used for the  menus and  the time  text. I  am not  multi-lingual
  139. myself and so  if you  see any  blatant  errors or silly mistakes
  140. then let me know and  I'll fix  them. Also, if  you would like to
  141. see your own  language or  any other  featured then  write  to me
  142. regarding the translation & we'll see about getting it included.

  152. Icon Tool Types

  154.      AboutClock now checks it's icon for the following recognised
  155. tool types:
  156.  
  157.         POSX=x        This can be set  to  any number but for the
  158.                       program to open its window, the coords must
  159.                       reside somewhere within the screen.
  160.                       Default=0
  161.  
  162.         POSY=y        Ditto..
  163.  
  164.         SPEECH=ON|OFF An "ON" or "on"  will  turn on regular time
  165.                       updates  whenever  the  time  changes.  Any
  166.                       other string value will be ignored.

  174.      My own very  personal  and non-PD  version. Ooo-err missus?!
  175. This is my very  first  attempt at  programming  a utility on the
  176. Amiga and it shows! It works fine on my machine but not on anyone
  177. elses!?

  180.      Some  errors  related to  telling the  time occur at certain
  181. times  of the day.  When  AboutClock  resizes  itself, all active
  182. processes receiving user input on Workbench are  resized, notably
  183. ED  and  SID V1.06, when used under Workbench 1.3 which can prove
  184. to be annoying, but not dangerous.
  185.      This version NOT released to the public.

  188.      Tells the correct time without errors.  About and Quit menus
  189. added.  Opens too  large  a  window, and crashes the machine when
  190. About is selected,  under  Workbench 1.3.  No  problems noted for
  191. Workbench 2 and above.
  192.      This version released  prior to testing on Workbench 1.3 and
  193. distributed on Amiga User International's April'93 issue.

  196.      Window  size  corrected,   and  selecting  About  no  longer
  197. crashes  the machine,  but  text  is  not  visible   (applies  to
  198. Workbench 1.3 only).

  201.      About  text  is  now  visible.  Error corrected in  telling,
  202. the time around 9am which was detected in V1.14b.
  203.      This version released on Amiga Computing's April'93 issue in
  204. which they reported that it was written in Pascal! Open your eyes
  205. guys  - since  when  have 'move.w 12(a0,d2.l),d3' or 'bmi.s' been
  206. Pascal commands?

  209.      About requester may be selected as often as you wish with no
  210. delay in updating it. Another error corrected in telling the time
  211. which was detected around 6pm.

  214.      AboutClock is alive! Version 2.00 includes speech. Also, the
  215. about  requestor  has  been  improved.  It also  works on WB3 but
  216. requires a copy of a narrator.device to be in the Devs directory,
  217. which is not supplied with WB3.

  220.      Another attempt was made to get the icon tool types to work.
  221. I can do this from 'C' but in assembler I just can't get the hang
  222. of it!? It will now work so long as  you run the program from the
  223. CLI and from  the same  directory as  AboutClock. I will probably
  224. fix it properly soon.

  227.      After getting bored with some other programming I was doing,
  228. I decided to fix the  problem  of  window  width for non-standard
  229. fonts on Workbench  which WB2.04  and better machines can use. It
  230. only worked before  if WB was  using  topaz-8 font. This has been
  231. solved now and will resize correctly whatever font is used.

  233. V3.00 31-8-93
  234.      Major revision  here to  include  different languages.  Many
  235. thanks go out to my friend  Daniel Amor in Stuttgart for the idea
  236. and doing the translations.

  240.      AboutClock V3.00 was  developed  on  a  HiQ Tower containing
  241. an  Amiga 500  Plus,  4Mb  of  16 Bit Fast RAM, 2Mb Chip RAM, SSL
  242. 68020 Accelerator Board with 4Mb  of 32 Bit Fast RAM,twin 3½ inch
  243. disk drives, a 5¼ inch  disk drive, a 105 Mb, 11ms  Quantum  hard
  244. disc drive, a Citizen Swift 24C printer, two Zipstick  joysticks,
  245. a Technosound Turbo sampler, a Naksha Mouse and a ProGen Genlock.
  246. It was  written in  100% assembler  using the  most excellent and
  247. bodacious HiSoft Devpac V3.04.
  248.  
  249.      For Workbench  1.3  compatibility, it was tested on an Amiga
  250. 500 with 4.5Mb 16 bit Fast RAM  and 0.5Mb  Chip RAM switchable to
  251. 4Mb 16 bit Fast RAM and  1Mb Chip  RAM(dodgy connection though!),
  252. twin 3.5 inch disk drives,  42Mb  GVP hard disc drive,  SSL 68020
  253. Accelerator Board with  1Mb of 32  bit Fast RAM  and a 68881 FPU,
  254. a KCS PC Emulator and an Argos screen filter(well it looks nice).

  256.      For  Workbench 3  compatibility, it was tested on  an  Amiga
  257. 1200,  2Mb Chip RAM,  4Mb Fast RAM, 68881 FPU, twin 3.5 inch disk
  258. drives, and a 60Mb hard disc drive. (not any more though Mel eh!)
  259. and Danny's Amiga 4000.
  260.  
  261.      Although  not  every  possible configuration of hardware has
  262. been  tested, (send me an A4000T and I will test AboutClock V3.00
  263. on it!), it  is  extremely  unlikely  that  AboutClock V3.00 will
  264. not work on your machine.

  266.      Please report  any errors / problems  to the author when you
  267. register your copy of AboutClock.
